How I Promote My Websites...
Watch as I
try and utilise a variety of website promotion tactics to increase
traffic to my websites (including HowIPromoteMyWebsite.com). Some
methods are familiar (writing articles, email marketing, building
incoming links), whilst others are relatively new (getting exposure
on social networking sites, using YouTube and Myspace etc.)
All will be revealed
via this page...
Website Promotion Diary
My name
is Steve M Nash and I am the site owner and webmaster at several
websites, and have been so since 1998. Over the years I have been
exposed to many, many methods of promoting web sites, but have got
lazy (I guess) and ended up utilising just a few, if any of those
website promotion strategies.
That's why
I decided to jump-start promoting a select few sites (My Websites
- see below), using a range of methods suggested to me from a variety
of sources (My Ideas and Sources - see below). So the intention,
each day in October, is to promote one or all of these sites, and
show how I go about doing it.
I will learn,
and hopefully you will learn too. So, let's begin...
My Promotion
Ideas (and Sources)
In no particular
order, I have collected web promotion ideas from the following sources:
- Jackie
Hole of 22 Minds Ltd (Google Adwords professional / SEO expert)
Not surprisingly Jackie suggests looking at Adwords and other
PPC search engines. She's also a fan of completely rebuilding
websites, especially those that are generated by content management
systems (CMS). Capturing people's email addresses is important
too.
- My
Promote Your Site Every Day (free email course)
My 7-day promotion course discusses the importance of building
in-bound links, of writing good press releases.
- Seach
Engine News (paid-for subscription)
Planet Ocean's excellent Search Engine News (ebook, newsletter)
talks about how to reduce the no. of supplemental results on Google,
and of how to make sure your site is known to the search engines
only as https://yoursite.com (and not as https://yoursite.com/index.html
). They also have an excellent set of articles discussing how
to build incoming links, and talk about so-called 'link bait'.
- Site
Build It! (service run by Sitesell.com)
Site Build It! is a somewhat unique tool in that it does much
of the site promotion for you. E.g. it handles Google Sitemaps;
it automatically submits new pages to search engines; it monitors
your search engine ranking; it checks for bad links, etc. Importantly,
it informs you of how well your page is optimised, and I shall
be looking at this for HowIPromoteMyWebsite which is a Site Build
It! website
- Kurt
Melvin (long page about SEO for websites)
Kurt talks about optimising websites not individual pages. He
talks about creating more pages rather worrying about trying to
reverse engineer the search engines. he makes a lot of sense,
actually.
I also have
a collection of ideas I've accumulated over the years (some of which
appear on How I Promote
My Website and some which don't). In particular, I'm interested
in exploiting so-called social networking sites and the new big
boys on the block like YouTube and Myspace.com (I would like to
credit Allan
Gardyne's 77 Ways ebook, in particular. )
So, I've already
started combining and compiling the strategies I'm going to employ
starting in October 2006.
My Websites
* According to Awstats
**
Sites created around Sept. 2006
As you can
see, my websites are a mish-mash of sites including a freebie site,
a content site, two directory listings sites and a 'fun' site.
Clearly, some
sites are more popular than others, and (equally clearly) each site
would benefit from a different approach when it comes to promotion.
And I shall
highlight the results of my efforts in my website
promotion blog.
So, as the
game host once famously said, "come on down"! Join in
the fun, and learn as you do so.
Thanks,
Steve
PS I suggest
you come back to these pages often :-)
