Dec 12, 2006, How I Improve My Website...

The words you use on your website matter. I know that more than most. Still, I insisted on putting the words "Executive Summary" on my pages to summarise (helpfully, I thought) what each of the site's pages is all about.

The words 'executive summary' might suit some readers, but I don't think they best suit my 'voice'. So I've changed the words to be of the form, 'How I summarise...'. Yes, that's much better.

It's all part of what Ken Evoy calls making your content presell.

Dec 5, 2006, Google Adwords Tips

Pay per click advertising is a great way to cheap, highly targeted traffic to your website. My pay per click advertising article explains the basics quite well. Hhowever, you can still waste an awful lot of money by getting some simple things wrong if you're not careful.

That's why I would always recommend further education regarding Google Adwords. Preferably this education would cost a little money, too (the amount you save in the long run makes purchasing recommended Adwords training a no-brainer, as they say!).

I have compiled a few free Adwords tips, though, for those reluctant to spend their cash. There are recommended resources to purchase for those happy to invest in their education also! ;-)

Nov 30, 2006, Hard work promoting a duplicate site!

A visitor got in touch yesterday wanting to know how to promote what is effectively a duplicate site (affiliate SFI site, to be precise) and this is my (shortened answer)

"An important aspect of marketing is to be different or do it first, or do it best etc. So you're not first promoting SFI but can you be different or is there something you can do the best.

"I shall be covering social networking sites soon in my newsletter, for example - that's still a new opportunity waiting to be exploited. Actually, I recommend that you create your own content-filled website and generate traffic to that. It's a lot easier to promote a unique website than the same site everyone else is trying to promote. Also, should that affiliate program end then what would you do. (A good example of creating your own website is Site Build It!. A bad example of promoting an affiliate program on a website is my guide to Site Build It! but anyway... :-) )

"So stay subscribed to the newsletter, I guess, and you could always take my 7-part free website promotion course (do a search on Google! ;-) )

Nov 29, 2006, Create Relevant Content, Create It Often!

At the risk of repeating myself (see Oct 4th), it is vital that you keep on creating (and promoting) new content. You may well be competing with sites that are updated every hour, so a site that gets updated every month is just not going to seem as important to the search engines, is it? (By the way this is all part of the Site Build It! philosophy which I really should follow more closely)

Okay, I've submitted a few articles to Ezine-Articles.com but they're still waiting to be reviewed. As soon as they give those articles the green light then I shall be promoting them to the other major article directories, and will start to write many more articles too. So, right now, I'm still waiting!

Nov 21, 2006, Write a newsletter

Staying in touch with your site visitors (or customers) is important, obviously! And the best way to do that is to write a newsletter or follow-up sequence of emails (both known as email marketing). But do you end up writing the same stuff all the time. Well, I've been writing my newsletter for several years but never had so much feedback as when I advised people recently to 'remind themselves of what their goals were, and to try not to learn too much at the same time'. That's all I said, offered no links to visit and definitely didn't offer anything to purchase. My advice went down well (which is nice!) :-)

Nov 16, 2006, Pay Per Click It!

Just noticed that Yahoo! Search Marketing are offering £ worth of free clicks to UK advertisers. 'Not bad' as Yahoo! are bound to improve their pay per click search engine (compared to Google Adwords) sooner rather than later. That will mean it will be more and more worthwhile using Yahoo! to get cheap clicks. (No, I haven't opened an account to help me promote my websites, yet! But you might want to! ;-) )

Nov 9, 2006, Rebuild Your Site (Deja Vu?)

Sometimes you really do need to start again with your website. Perhaps the content is 'wrong' or needs a new focus (i.e. the site's most wanted response is not being emphasised enough!). In my case, I've decided to integrate the ads. on the site more aggressively. Thankfully, I use templates to build the site so the change did not take too long.

Nov 1, 2006, Check Your Links Work!

It's all very well promoting your website this way then that, in a bid to get higher rankings on search engines like Google but it will be in vain somewhat if the links on your site don't work. So it's important that you regularly check that all of your links work. Fortunately, HowIPromoteMyWebsite.com is Site Build It! website and I get sent a bad-link report whenever a bad link is found, automatically.

For my other sites, I rely on the excellent, and free Xenu Link Sleuth (PC only). Xenu does take a little while to check links, but it's worth using as getting rid of bad links is very satisfying to me, my site visitors and to the search engines (who hate finding bad links).

Oct 26, 2006, Build A Site Map

It's important that your site has what's called a sitemap. This is a location of all of the pages on your website, which makes it easy for a) your site visitors to find a particular website page and b) search engines to properly index the whole of your site.

Here's an example site map from one of my website's: UK Shopping Site Map

Google Sitemaps is Google's attempt to automate this process (though the sitemaps they require are usually in a format suitable only to Google)

Oct 25, 2006, Rebuild Your Site

Sometimes you really do need to start again with your website. Perhaps the content is 'wrong' or needs a new focus, or perhaps you just need to completely review your internal linking strategies, etc. Thankfully, this particular website is a Site Build It! website, and I can easily tell how well the site is optimised. I can also review my page-building strategy by simply going through the SBI! Action Guide. (I must do this, soon!)

I've just listened to Christopher Knight from Ezine-Articles.com being interviewed by Jeff Herring, The Article Guy. Their conversation lasting just over an hour has completely re-converted me to the effectiveness of article marketing in delivering free traffic to a website. (I used to write articles a few years ago, but will now re-commit to this promotion activity. I suggest you do too.)

It is worth your while getting listed on the directories listed at Strongest Links. However, if money is short I can recommend Isedb.com and thisisouryear.com, at least in terms of ranking well on Google when I do a search for mysitename.com

An important way to promote your websites is to write content on a regular basis (a bit like I'm doing with this blog). Search engines like Google 'value' often updating sites more than those sites that only change every six months. However, you also need to promote this new content in its own right. And that's why I wrote an article showing you how to do this.

Sometimes it's difficult to think of what to write in your newsletter or ezine. You can't always write a new article or tip but you should publish something on a regular basis. In these cases I take a leaf(!) out of the offline publishing world, and I simply reprint a question from one of my subscribers, followed by an answer.

I've been away (on a writing course, believe it or not!) but have come back determined to promote, promote, promote. The first thing I've been doing is adding useful posts (I hope!) to a variety of forums, with appropriate signature file (that links to a relevant website). This brings delivers visitors and inbound links.
